Spring has Sprung!

South Side Playscape
The newest addition to our South Side playground, the natural playscape, is well-loved and played in every day by our children. They mine for “gold”, make imaginary campfires in the teepees and serve up Pokemon cards in our “restaurant”.  All of this energetic play has caused the playscape area to get a bit shaggy.  John Woods has offered to help direct the clean-up work in the playscape. TJ, my husband, doesn’t know it yet, but he’ll be helping as well. ;) (He’s a GREAT guy!)  If you and your children have an hour or two to spare on Saturday, April 23 beginning at 9:00 am, we’d MUCH appreciate as many helpers as possible. We’ll be raking wood chips, rearranging teepees and cleaning up our trails. If you enjoy working with friends outdoors, we’d very much appreciate the help!

3-day to 4-day!
We’re so excited! Please remember that we will be adding another day to our 3-day kindergarten schedule after we return from Spring Break.  Our schedule will be as follows: Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  This schedule starts the week of April 11.  We look forward to spending another day with the kindergartners!

"Good" Friday

It was a beautiful morning as I set out to greet students this morning. After saying, “Have a Good Friday!” to the first three or four students, I realized that saying this today has a totally different meaning. As Christians, we are journeying toward Easter Sunday, but without Good Friday we could not sing “Christ the Lord is Risen today!”

At South Side, the students and staff have been making Street Carpets as a way to visualize the journey of Christ during Holy Week. At Pine Ridge we will end our day with a Good Friday service that will help the students to feel a bit of the journey. Good Friday (the dark part) of the Holy Week is not a part of the journey we enjoy celebrating, but without it we could not rejoice that Easter is Coming! Alleluiah!

South Side Street Carpet
In classrooms, in chapel and even in the hallways we've been both remembering and living through Holy Week with our students this week at South Side. We took a cue from our brothers and sisters living in Guatemala and celebrated the events of Holy Week by making a street carpet. Below you can view the contribution to our street carpet from each classroom. When pieced together in the hallway, our students were able to walk through the events that Jesus did and perhaps gain a new understanding of what Christ endured on our behalf.

Palm Sunday. The Triumphant March into Jerusalem

Jesus Cleansing the Temple

Mrs. Baker's preschoolers' faces surround the last supper table.

Understanding the significance of the bread and wine

Mrs. Johnson traced each child's feet and talked about servanthood, modeled by Christ.

Praying in the Garden of Gethsemane

"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me" Luke 22:42

Kindergarteners were asked, if Peter could have spoken with Jesus right after the crow of the rooster, what might he have said? One replied, "Jesus, can you still love me?" A question we all ask! Praise God for Jesus' reply, "I will love you ALWAYS!"

The Pure Joy and Celebration of Easter Morning!!!

"The first graders and teachers would like to thank our South Side family for supporting our efforts to save acreage in the Amazon Rainforest.  We are overwhelmed by the great response to our Bake Sale.  We earned over $ 300 which allows us to save six(6) acres of this rapidly decreasing ecosystem.  Thank you so very much for helping us respond to our cultural mandate to care for God's Earth.  We are most grateful!"

Commemorating a Special Week

Next week, we are eager to help our students understand and experience the most significant week in our Christian faith. We will remember and celebrate Holy Week in very special ways with your children. As the apostle Paul states in 1 Corinthians, we would be the most pitiable of all people were it not for the significant events that Jesus endured during Holy Week. Because of Christ’s death and resurrection, we have hope in every circumstance. This past week, you have been invited to lift our HC third grader, Caroline Kanis, to our Risen Savior in prayer. The outpouring of love, faith and prayers from friends, family and community bear witness to the love of Christ shining stronger than the fear of the dark and unknown. Caroline’s family has tried to put into words the appreciation they feel for the love they have been blessed wtih, “We treasure each one of you; each prayer, though it may be fleetingly brief, is a precious ointment, a drop of healing, a drop restoration, a drop of wholeness of inestimable worth to us.”

You may follow Caroline’s progress and offer your support at their carepage and/or their facebook prayer page. Additionally, please see below for details regarding the Prayers for Caroline event planned for Sunday afternoon at 3:00 at the high school. This is intended to be a family-friendly event for those who desire to support and pray for Caroline, as one body of Christ, in her time of need. Caroline's Hospital Book

Prayers for Caroline
Any student, family, friend and/or community members who desires to join together with other brothers and sisters in Christ to lift Caroline and her family in prayer are invited to come to Holland Christian High School this Sunday at 3:00. For approximately 30 minutes we will pray together as well as offer meaningful activities for children to visualize their prayers as they too petition our Heavenly Father on Caroline’s behalf.

Additionally, Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital has created a book for our children called book link here   In child appropriate ways, this books helps answer questions that young children may have about Caroline’s illness and her stay in the hospital.

Guatemalan Street Carpet
Did you know that our brothers and sisters in Christ living in Guatemala commemorate and celebrate the events of Holy Week by decorating their streets with a beautiful street carpet? You may have noticed a small piece about this in the most recent edition of The Banner. The children at South Side are also decorating a street carpet of sorts. Each classroom will depict the various events of Holy Week on a mural-sized piece of paper. The artwork will be pieced together on our floor creating our “hallway street carpet”. As students stroll by the carpet, they will be able to visualize how the events of that significant week took place and triumphantly climaxed with the resurrection of Christ! If you are able, please feel free to take a peek at our “hallway street carpet” toward the end of the week next week at South Side.

Hallway street carpet designed by Mrs. Baker's preschool class depicting the last supper.

The Fun Night Team has been planning a fun family night for all. The games are built, the theme is chosen, and the collection of needed items continues to trickle into the building. The time, work, and planning to to put together a evening full of games, food, and prizes is incredible. We will all enjoy the fruits of the committee’s labor. I am sure that the students will have a great time.

Thanks to everyone for your contribution of time, money, work, and support. It is our hope that this evening is a “Family Fun Night” and a time to come together as a community. As you wander the halls, classrooms, and gym at Pine Ridge, please take time to talk with those you may not know well, catch up with those you have not had a chance to visit with lately, and enjoy the fellowship of being together as a school family. See you next Friday night for “Suessville Family Fun Night” from 5:30-8:00!

Play In Their Day

Play is an integral part of the life of a developing child. A lot of critical growth happens when children are given the time and space to play. This is true even for our “big” kids. Creative expression, cooperation, communication and choice are just a few of the life skills children can freely practice and explore through play. We value play at Holland Christian as one of the foundational components of learning. It is marvelous to watch and listen to your children’s imagination take off as they have been working together in the snow outdoors throughout the past few months. Not only does wintery landscape provide the obvious hills and mounds to slide on and exert physical energy, our children also transform the snow into bread stores, snow forts, Minecraft worlds, Star Wars worlds and beyond. While I have to say I am eager for the blossoms and buds of springtime, it is inspiring to step into our children’s snowy world of creative play.
